FIRE DEPT. HISTORY

Engine No 1 in front of first Rocky Grove Vol. Fire Department.

The Rocky Grove Vol. Fire Dept. was founded in 1933 during the great depression. The community found it necessary to form it’s own Fire Dept. after the City of Franklin Fire Dept. was instructed by its governing council to stop responding out of the city to provide fire suppression services. The Rocky Grove Vol. Fire Dept. first consisted of a small bucket and ladder brigade which stored buckets, ladders, and hoses throughout the community. In Nov. 1932 the Fire Dept. obtained it’s first fire truck a 1929 GMC/American LaFrance truck for $3,750.00. Our first Fire Station was located at the corner of Rocky Grove Ave. and Phipps Street in the old A.C. Billiland building under chief Ralph Brannon.

In the 40's our department began acquiring land at the corner of Fox and Wood Street (now call Shuffstall Street). In 1952 through 1955, more land was secured adjacent to that which we had already purchased. These purchases, along with the purchase of 30 acres from Wolf's Head Refinery, make up the current grounds. Station 21-2 was established in 1958 in the Village of Sugarcreek.

In 1968, ground breaking took place for our current Station 21-1 which was dedicated on May 25, 1969. The new station played host to the North-Western Firemen's Association Convention on August 16 and 17 of 1968.
